7th Annual Conference of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy

4 December 2012

The seventh annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy (ISSDP) will be held at Universidad de los Andes, in Bogotá, Colombia, May 15th ‐ 17th, 2013. The event is being hosted by the Research Center on Drugs and Security at Universidad de los Andes.

The conference will be of interest to policy makers, practitioners and academics from a wide array of disciplines who are engaged in drug policy analyses pertaining to drug markets, the harms caused by both the supply of and demand for drugs, and the intended and unintended consequences of different drug policies.

The theme of the conference will be “Collateral costs of illegal drugs and the war on drugs: violence, corruption and institutional instability”. This will structure the content of keynote lectures and provide an analytical thread that runs through all the sessions. Papers on other topics such as demand reduction, treatment and prevention policies, etc., are also very welcome to apply.

The invited keynote speakers are:

  • Mark Kleiman (UCLA, United States)
  • Fiona Measham (Lancaster University, UK)
  • General (R) Oscar Naranjo (Colombia)
  • Eduardo Medina‐Mora (Mexican Ambassador to the UK) – TBC.

Researchers and/or practitioners interested in contributing papers that advance future thinking regarding the development, assessment, or evolution of drug policy nationally or internationally are encouraged to submit abstracts.

Abstracts containing between 200 and 400 words and panel proposals (containing abstracts for each paper in the panel) should be submitted to ISSDP2013@uniandes.edu.co before December 15th, 2012. Decisions will be announced at the end of January 2013.

The conference organisers welcome the submission of themed panels as well as individual abstracts. Panels including participants from diverse countries will be preferred to panels consisting of papers from researchers in only one country.

A feature of this conference is the use of expert discussants for all sessions. To facilitate discussion, this conference requires that all presenters submit a written paper. This is due at least five weeks prior to the conference (April 10th, 2013) in order for discussants and other participants researchers in only one country.

This conference is retaining two important features from previous conferences. First, ISSDP is pleased to announce that once again will be offering competitions for scholarships for doctoral students and participants from developing countries. Details of these programs will be available at the ISSDP web page: http://www.issdp.org/

Second, we are also inviting proposals for topics and speakers for two half day workshops on specific aspects of drug policy analysis that will be held at the Universidad de los Andes campus on Friday May 17th, 2013. Please send any enquiries and proposals to ISSDP2013@uniandes.edu.co by December 15th, 2013 at the latest (earlier would be preferable).

The working language of the conference will be English. Translation services (Spanish to English and English to Spanish) will be available in some sessions of the conference.
